NEVER MISS A MARINA WITH A SWIMMING POOL
I was given this advice by a long-forgotten sailor many tides ago. In our 19 years of living aboard, Mandy and I have spent a lot of that time living and working in marinas and I’m happy to pass on that tip as being tops.
All if those adventurers who have ever completed the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers will know about the one in RODNEY BAY MARINA in St Lucia.
I once had the great good fortune to teach an RYA Day Skipper Theory course sat by that pool to a happy half dozen Fast Track sailors. A dip between course to steer questions livens the brain cells a tad!
Earlier this year, on a delivery, I visited SHELTER BAY MARINA in Panama. This is where cruisers gather waiting to sort out their canal transits.
Dates to the days of the US base FORT SHERMAN. Lovely pool right next to the bar! I get the impression that the pool, bar, small hotel and restaurant were converted from the old Officers Quarters. The nearby boatyard also uses old workshops from that age.
No wonder they built the pool to relax in, Panama is hot, hot, hot!!!
Nicest of all is at our own home base at MARINA RUBICON
Sculptured in amongst the marina walkways and restaurants, it’s the ideal place to cool off – unheated!! Freebie for those staying in yachts in the marina.
As much as I enjoy swimming in the sea, cool clear pools do it for me!
