TROPICAL REVOLVING STORMS
This week has been a harsh lesson in the sheer power of nature.
Hurricanes in the Atlantic are now very much in people’s awareness after the devastation caused by Harvey and Irma.
A part of the RYA OCEAN THEORY course is to gain an understanding of how these storms develop and their seasonal behaviour. This allows sailors to plan and operate around them for long distance cruising and to stay safe.
From that sailors’ point of view, it can be seen how commercial pressures ad risk taking can outweigh these factors.
It is very sad for all those who have had their lives changed by these storms, some maybe will never recover.
To our cruisers though, with their mobility, these things can be avoided.
My favourite website (amongst many) is –
Wunderground – hurricanes and tropical cyclones
Dr Jeff Masters has a fascinating background and actually flew into these storms with the Hurricane Hunters.
So, if you have long term plans, learning about the TRS and understanding how they develop is important, but also an extremely interesting insight into how our planet works.
Is that why we go sailing in the first place??
